What the fault codes mean

Code	What Miele says it is
F11 or Water drainage fault	The drain is restricted. Miele lists three causes: the end of the drain hose sits higher than the maximum delivery head of 3 ft 3 in, the hose is kinked, or the drain filter and pump are blocked.
Water inlet fault	The water inlet is blocked or restricted: the faucet is closed, or the plastic inlet filter inside the hose connector is soiled.
F20 or Heating fault	Thermostop started because the set temperature was not reached within the specified time. Miele asks you to disconnect the machine for at least two minutes and restart the program; if it returns, the heating circuit needs a technician.
F210 or Check filter + nozzle	A fault in the suds circulation system. The nozzle at the top of the door sealing ring is blocked with lint, or the drain filter is blocked.
F19	A technical fault, described by Miele as a stiff flow meter. This one is not a user repair.

Code meanings are taken from Miele customer support, mieleusa.com, checked in August 2026. Codes vary between model generations, so treat the display message as the starting point rather than the diagnosis.

What you can check yourself

Read the display and write the code down. It is the single most useful thing you can tell us on the phone.
Open the drain filter flap at the bottom front, put a shallow dish underneath and unscrew the filter slowly. Hot water will come out if the machine has just washed at a high temperature.
Look behind the machine: the drain hose must not be kinked, and its end must not sit higher than 3 ft 3 in above the floor.
Check that the faucet is fully open, then unscrew the inlet hose from the faucet and rinse the small plastic filter inside the connector.
Run your finger along the top of the rubber door seal and clear the lint out of the nozzle you find there.
Run a hot maintenance wash with an empty drum. If the smell or the residue was the whole problem, this ends it.

Where to stop

Stop if the drum knocks or grinds on spin, if the machine trips a breaker, if water appears under the machine, or if the same fault code comes back after a restart. Bearings and heating circuits are not a wait-and-see repair: a bearing that is caught early is a bearing job, and a bearing that is ignored takes the drum and the shaft with it.

Why does my Miele washer say the drain is restricted when the filter is clean?

Because the filter is only the first of three places Miele points at. The drain hose behind the machine may be kinked, or its end may be sitting higher than the 3 ft 3 in maximum delivery head, which the pump cannot overcome. Both are easy to miss because they are behind the machine, not in front of it.

My Miele washer is 15 years old. Is it still worth repairing?

Usually yes, and that is not a sales line: these machines were designed for about 20 years of domestic use, parts are still available, and the common failures at that age are the drain pump, the heating element and the door interlock.
