Freezer Repair in Los Angeles and Orange County

A freezer that is failing usually gives you a day or two of warning: ice cream that has gone soft, frost creeping across the back wall, a motor that runs and never stops. We repair freezers in the home across Los Angeles and Orange County - built-in columns, the freezer half of a refrigerator, chest and upright freezers in the garage - usually the same or the next day.

Below is what the common symptoms turn out to be, what is worth checking before anyone comes out, and what to do with the food while you decide.

It is not freezing, or not freezing hard enough

Before anything else, read the setpoint and then check what the freezer is actually doing rather than what the panel says. Put a thermometer between packages, leave it a few hours, and compare. Panels lie when a sensor has drifted, and that difference is the first thing we ask about on the phone.

The checks that cost nothing: the door seal along its whole length, because a flat spot at one corner will keep a freezer a few degrees warm forever; the vents inside, which stop working when the basket is packed against them; and the condenser, which on most units is a grille at the back or behind the kickplate and which collects dust and pet hair until the machine cannot shed heat.

If those are clean and it is still warm, it is the defrost circuit, the evaporator fan, a sensor or the sealed system. Which of them decides whether the repair is an hour or a decision about the appliance, and we tell you which before starting.

Frost building up where it should not

A thin even layer on the walls of a manual-defrost chest freezer is normal and needs defrosting once or twice a year. What is not normal is frost on a frost-free freezer: a slab on the back wall, ice under the baskets, or a sheet across the floor of the compartment.

That pattern means the defrost cycle has stopped working - the heater, the thermostat or the timer - and the giveaway is that the freezer keeps working for a while, then slowly warms as the ice blocks the airflow. People often defrost it by hand, find it working again, and call us three weeks later when it has iced up once more.

Ice building up around the door, or the door not sealing after ice has formed, is the other common one, and on garage freezers in Los Angeles it is usually humidity plus a seal that no longer grips.

It runs constantly

In a hot garage in summer, a freezer running most of the time is doing its job, not failing. Two things separate normal from not: whether it still holds its temperature, and whether the compressor ever stops at night when the garage cools.

A freezer that runs and holds temperature usually needs its condenser cleaned and some space around it. A freezer that runs and drifts warm is losing capacity, and that is the sealed system or a fan.

Worth knowing about garage installations: many domestic freezers are not rated for the temperature swings a Southern California garage gets, and a unit that behaves badly out there can be perfectly healthy - it is being asked to work outside what it was built for.

What to do with the food

Keep the door shut. A full freezer holds cold far longer than an empty one, and every opening costs you hours of margin.

If the food has begun to thaw, the sensible order is: refreeze nothing that has warmed to room temperature, use anything still firm within a day or two, and throw out what you are unsure about. We are repair people, not food safety authorities, and would rather say that plainly than guess at hours and temperatures.

If the freezer is a built-in column and the repair needs a part on order, say so when you call: we would rather tell you that on the phone than after you have lost a freezer full of food waiting for us.

Where we come out

Los Angeles and Orange County, in the home: built-in freezer columns and the freezer side of built-in refrigerators, and free-standing chest and upright freezers wherever they stand, including the garage.

Have the make and model ready when you call - inside the door or on the back panel - along with what the freezer reads and what a thermometer says inside it. Sensors, fans and defrost parts for the common models ride on the van.

If your freezer is part of a Sub-Zero, Viking, Fisher & Paykel or DCS built-in, our brand pages set out what those makers publish about their own faults and codes.

Questions we get asked

My freezer is warm but the refrigerator side is fine. What is that?

On a combined unit that pattern usually means the evaporator fan or the defrost circuit rather than the compressor - the cold is being made but not moved.

There is a slab of ice on the back wall. Should I defrost it?

You can, and it will work for a few weeks, but on a frost-free freezer that ice means the defrost cycle has failed. It will come back until the heater, thermostat or timer is replaced.

The freezer in my garage runs all the time. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. In summer heat, running most of the time is normal if it still holds temperature. Clean the condenser and give it space. If it runs and drifts warm, that is a fault.

Can I refreeze food that has thawed?

Anything that reached room temperature, no. Anything still firm, use it within a day or two rather than refreezing it.

Do you repair chest freezers as well as built-ins?

Yes - built-in columns, the freezer half of a refrigerator, and free-standing chest and upright freezers, including in the garage.

How fast can you come out?

Same or next day in most cases, across Los Angeles and Orange County.
