How to read a KitchenAid dishwasher code

A dishwasher without a display still gives you the code. KitchenAid's own method: count the first burst of quick flashes, that is the F number; wait through the pause of a second or two; count the second burst, that is the E number. Seven flashes, a pause, one flash, repeating, is F7 E1.

The reset for any of them is the same and it is worth doing once: take power away from the dishwasher for half a minute, at the breaker or by unplugging it under the sink, then restore it. Codes that came from a single event go away; codes that name a dead part come straight back.

One warning on the drain codes, because it is the most common call on this brand: if the filter is clean, the hose is straight and the disposer is clear, stop there. Running the machine again and again to see whether it drains this time is how a drain pump that needed a part turns into a kitchen floor that needs a plumber.

KitchenAid ovens and ranges

On the cooking side the display speaks in the same F and E pairs, and KitchenAid's own step for most of them is a full power reset: turn the breaker off for a minute and back on. That clears codes thrown by a brownout or a surge, which in older Los Angeles wiring is not rare.

Some of what people take for faults is not one. PF simply means the power failed while the oven was on - press cancel and reset the clock. LOC or Lock is the control lock, SAB is Sabbath mode, CAL is the calibration feature, and a plain C on the display means the oven is showing Celsius rather than Fahrenheit. Each of those is a setting, not a repair, and the owner's manual has the key sequence.

The one code worth taking seriously on arrival is F9 or F9 E0. KitchenAid says the outlet or the connection to the appliance may be miswired, and on a recent installation they tell you to get an electrician rather than a repair company. We say the same: that code is about the power reaching the range, not about the range.

Everything else on these ovens is the ordinary list - a bake element that has burnt through, an oven sensor drifting so the oven runs a hundred degrees out, a door latch that will not release after a clean cycle, a control board that has lost the relay for the broil element.

KitchenAid refrigerators

A KitchenAid refrigerator with an F flashing on the display gets the same treatment KitchenAid prescribes: kill the power at the breaker or unplug the unit for one minute, restore it, then make sure the cooling function is actually switched back on - it is easy to leave a unit sitting in a mode where the lights work and nothing cools. Watch it for a minute to see whether the code comes back.

If it does, the code is naming a sensor, a fan or a board. What we see most on the French door models is the evaporator fan and the defrost circuit: the freezer stays cold, the refrigerator side climbs, and the cause is behind the back panel of the freezer rather than anywhere the owner can see.

Before booking, the two free checks that do catch calls: the door seals along their whole length, and the vents inside the cabinet. A refrigerator packed so full that air cannot move will read warm with nothing wrong.
