Ice Maker Not Making Ice: What to Check
An ice maker fails at one of three points: water never arrives, water arrives but does not freeze, or ice forms but never drops. Sort your case first. No water at all points at a closed shutoff, a kinked line, a clogged filter or a dead fill valve. Water that arrives but stays liquid means the freezer is not cold enough or the ice maker module is dead. Ice that forms but stays put means the ejector, the motor or a frozen fill tube. Half of the calls we take on this end with a filter that was last changed years ago.
What causes it
| Cause | What you see | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Shutoff valve closed or line kinked | No water, no hum at the valve, often after the fridge was moved | You can check it |
| Water filter clogged | Slow ice, small or hollow cubes, weak water at the dispenser | You can change it |
| Frozen fill tube | A tongue of ice at the back of the ice maker, empty bin | You can thaw it |
| Fill valve failed | Filter and line are fine, valve does not open, no water into the mold | Technician |
| Freezer too warm | Ice forms slowly or not at all, ice cream is soft | Technician |
| Ice maker module or ejector motor | Mold is full of ice, nothing drops into the bin | Technician |
Four things carry water before a single cube exists.
What you can check yourself
- Check the arm or the switch. A bail arm knocked up, or an off switch on a touch panel, stops the whole cycle and looks exactly like a failure.
- Look under the sink for the shutoff valve to the fridge and make sure it is open.
- Check the date on the water filter. Six months is the usual limit, and in hard water areas it is less.
- Look at the back of the ice maker for a spur of ice on the fill tube. A hair dryer on low, from a distance, clears it.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer. Ice needs a freezer at zero degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Warmer than five and ice production drops off a cliff.
- Force a harvest cycle if your model has a test button, and listen. Motor noise with no ice means the mold is empty and water is the problem.
Where to stop
Stop when the arm is down, the valve is open, the filter is new and the freezer is cold, and there is still no ice. What is left is a fill valve, a module or a sealed system that is not holding temperature. Those need meters and a water line pulled apart, and a fill valve fitted wrong floods the kitchen floor overnight.

Questions we get asked
The cubes are small and hollow. What does that mean?
Weak water flow. Nine times out of ten it is the filter, sometimes a partly closed shutoff or a line pinched behind the fridge when it was pushed back.
How long after a filter change until ice comes back?
Give it a full day. A modern ice maker makes ice in batches of eight to twelve cubes every couple of hours, so a bin does not refill in an evening.
Should I keep the ice maker off while I wait for the repair?
Yes, if water is reaching it and freezing where it should not. Leaving it running just builds more ice around the fill tube for us to melt.
Does a Sub-Zero ice maker fail differently?
The parts are better but the pattern is the same, and on built-in units a dirty condenser shows up as poor ice long before anything else goes wrong.
Which brands do you work on?
All of them, including Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, KitchenAid, Bosch, LG, Samsung and standalone Scotsman and U-Line machines.
