Freezer Not Freezing: What to Check
A freezer that will not hold temperature is telling you one of three things. If the fridge side is still cold and only the freezer suffers, look at airflow and the door seal before anything else. If both compartments are warm, the machine is not making cold at all, and the usual causes are dirty condenser coils, a dead condenser fan or a failed start relay. If the freezer is packed with frost and food is thawing at the same time, the defrost system has quit and the coil is buried in ice.
What causes it
| Cause | What you see | Who fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Door seal not sealing | Frost around the door edge, condensation, motor running non-stop | You can check it |
| Vents blocked by packed food | Cold spots and warm spots in the same freezer | You can fix it |
| Condenser coils packed with dust | Both sides warm, cabinet sides hot to the touch | You can clear it |
| Defrost system failed | Thick frost on the back wall, temperature creeping up over days | Technician |
| Evaporator or condenser fan | No air noise inside, or no fan running at the back | Technician |
| Sealed system or compressor | Nothing gets cold for days, compressor runs but never cools | Technician |
The same cooling circuit serves both compartments.
What you can check yourself
- Close the door on a strip of paper and pull. If it slides out with no drag, the seal is done and the freezer is fighting warm air all day.
- Move food off the back wall and the vents. A freezer packed to the ceiling cannot circulate its own air.
- Vacuum the condenser coils underneath or behind the unit.
- Look at the back wall for frost. A smooth sheet of ice over the vents means defrost, not the compressor.
- Put a thermometer between the packages and read it after four hours. Zero degrees Fahrenheit is the target, and eyeballing ice cream is not a measurement.
- Check the freezer is not fighting the room. A garage freezer in a Los Angeles summer needs a garage-rated model to work at all.
Where to stop
Stop once the seal is good, the vents are clear and the coils are clean. Defrost heaters, thermostats, fans and anything sealed need instruments to diagnose properly, and guessing at parts on a freezer is expensive: while you guess, the food is thawing.

Questions we get asked
The fridge is fine but the freezer is not. Is that possible?
Yes, and it usually points at the door seal, blocked vents or the defrost system, not at the compressor. The compressor failing takes both sides down together.
How long does food stay safe?
A full freezer holds about forty-eight hours unopened, a half-full one about a day. Keep the door shut and that clock stretches a long way.
Is heavy frost normal?
A light rime is. A wall of ice on the back panel is not: that is the defrost system quitting, and it is one of the most common repairs on the older units we see.
Can I defrost it myself and carry on?
You can, and it will work for a week or two. Then the ice comes back, because the reason the machine stopped defrosting itself is still there.
Which brands do you work on?
All of them, including Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, Bosch, Miele, KitchenAid, LG, Samsung and standalone chest freezers.
