What the fault codes mean

Code	What Miele says it is
Demo mode activated. Appliance does not heat up	Exactly what it says. Confirm the message with OK, then go to Settings, choose Showroom, choose Demo mode, and set it to Off. The oven heats again immediately.
F23	The Self Clean temperature was not reached, which Miele attributes to significant residual soiling in the oven compartment. Switch off, remove the coarse soiling and start Self Clean again.
F32	The door lock for the Self Clean process does not close. Miele asks you to check for a foreign object in the door seal area, switch off and restart the process.
F33	The door lock for the Self Clean process will not open. Interrupt the process by switching the appliance off; if the lock still will not release, it needs a technician rather than force.

F23 and F32 you can clear. F33 is the one to call about.

What you can check yourself

If the oven will not heat, check demo mode first: Settings, then Showroom, then Demo mode, then Off.
Check the breaker. A double oven or a range often sits on its own circuit, and half a dead panel usually means half a tripped breaker.
Before running Self Clean, take out the racks and scrape out the heavy soiling. F23 is what the oven shows when there is too much left in there to reach temperature.
Put an oven thermometer on the middle shelf and compare it with the set temperature after a 20 minute preheat. That number tells us more than any description of how the cakes came out.
Run a finger round the door seal and look for a crumb or a piece of foil in the lock area if Self Clean refuses to start.
On steam models, run the descaling program if it has been a while. Our water makes that a maintenance item, not an optional extra.

Where to stop

Stop if the door is locked shut after Self Clean, if you smell burning insulation, if the glass has cracked, or if the oven trips the breaker. Do not try to lever a Self Clean lock open: the mechanism is behind the fascia and forcing it turns a lock repair into a door and control repair.

My Miele oven lights up but never gets hot. What is wrong?

Check demo mode before anything else. Miele ovens have a showroom setting that keeps the display and controls alive while the heating stays off, and the message on screen says so directly. Confirm with OK, go to Settings, Showroom, Demo mode, Off. If the oven still will not heat, then the element or the relay is the suspect and that is our job.

The door locked during Self Clean and will not open. Can I force it?

No. That is F33, and Miele's instruction is to interrupt the process by switching the appliance off, then call service if the lock still will not release. The lock mechanism sits behind the fascia, and prying at the door usually adds a hinge and a fascia to the repair bill.

The oven is 25 degrees off. Is that repairable?

Yes, and it is usually the temperature sensor rather than anything structural. It is one of the more satisfying repairs on these ovens: a small part restores an appliance that had become unpredictable to cook with.

Why did Self Clean stop with F23?

Because the cavity never reached cleaning temperature, and Miele attributes that to heavy residual soiling. Take out the racks, scrape out what you can and run it again. If it fails on a genuinely clean cavity, the fault is in the heating or the sensor.

Do you repair Miele combi-steam ovens and warming drawers?
