What the fault codes mean

Code	What Miele says it is
F11	Water in the wash cabinet. On G 1xxx to G 6xxx models Miele points at the non-return valve being incorrectly positioned and asks that the drain pump impeller be checked by turning it by hand. On G 7xxx and G 5xxx Discovery models built from 2019 onward, the drain pump cover has to come off instead.
F12, F13 or F15	The water inlet is blocked or restricted. Miele lists a closed faucet and a soiled inlet filter in the water intake valve as the causes.
F14 and F78	The circulation pump is blocked. Miele attributes this to the pump drying out and sticking during long breaks between cycles, and gives a soak procedure rather than a part replacement as the first step.
F24	A heating relay contact fault. Miele states plainly that this is not a fault you can remedy yourself.

Code meanings are taken from Miele customer support, mieleusa.com, checked in August 2026. Codes vary between model generations, so treat the display message as the starting point rather than the diagnosis.

Miele's own first step for F14 and F78 is a soak, not a new pump.

What you can check yourself

Write down the code on the display before you switch anything off.
Lift out the filter combination in the floor of the tub, rinse it under the faucet and check the fine mesh against the light. In our hard water it clogs slowly and silently.
For F14 or F78, follow the Miele soak: remove the lower spray arm and the filter combination, pour in about a quart of hot water, no hotter than 165 degrees, with three to five drops of rinse aid, and leave it to stand for five minutes.
Check that the faucet is fully open and that the inlet hose is not kinked behind the machine.
Take out the lower spray arm and check that the small holes are clear.
Check the salt reservoir and the water hardness setting if the complaint is film on glassware rather than a fault code.

Most cloudy glass calls in our area end at the salt reservoir.

Where to stop

Stop if you see water in the base tray, if the machine trips a breaker, if the code is F24 or any code Miele marks as a technical fault, or if the pump still will not turn after the soak. Close the faucet and call us.

What does F11 mean on a Miele dishwasher?

It means there is water in the wash cabinet that should have drained. On G 1xxx to G 6xxx machines Miele attributes it to the non-return valve sitting incorrectly, and asks that the drain pump impeller be turned by hand to check it is free. On G 7xxx and G 5xxx Discovery machines from 2019 onward the drain pump cover is removed instead. It is a mechanical fault far more often than an electronic one.

My Miele dishwasher was unused for months and now it hums without washing.

That is the classic F14 or F78 picture. The circulation pump dries out and sticks. Miele's own first step is a soak rather than a new pump: spray arm and filters out, a quart of hot water no hotter than 165 degrees with a few drops of rinse aid, five minutes to stand. If the pump frees up, nothing needs replacing.

Why are my glasses cloudy even though the machine works?

Almost always water hardness rather than a fault. Southern California water is hard, and if the salt reservoir is empty or the hardness setting is wrong, the machine cannot soften the water it is given. Correct both before assuming the machine is at fault.

Can you get parts for an older Miele dishwasher?

In most cases yes. Miele supports its dishwashers for a long service life, and the parts that commonly fail, pumps, valves, seals and door hinges, remain available for machines well over a decade old.
